The Yakima City Council on Tuesday took action that officially cancels the Yakima Central Plaza.
The council voted unanimously to end the project after a November advisory vote told the council a majority of city residents were against the project. City officials say about $2 million in private money will be refunded to donors the rest of the money was only pledged to the city so no refunds are needed.
The council on Tuesday also voted in favor of an ordinance that changes the zoning on property near the Yakima Greenway in Terrace Heights. The ordinance was approved as part of the consent agenda. The change opens the possibility of a permanent homeless shelter to be built in the area within the next two years.
