The Union Gap Fire Department has been officially shifted to the Yakima Fire Department.

The Yakima City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a three-year agreement under which the city of Union Gap will pay Yakima nearly $1.2 million a year to take over Union Gap fire services. The agreement means nine Union Gap Fire Department employees will become Yakima city employees and all fire calls in the two cities will officially be handled by the Yakima Fire Department.

In other action Tuesday, the Yakima City Council  voted to maintain a moratorium on homeless shelters in the city until city officials can better define where the shelters can legally locate within city limits. The Yakima Planning Commission is expected to talk further about the issue and eventually submit recommendations to the City Council within the next month.
