Davis high school art instructor Carol Wild-Delano is celebrating with her son in Russia today.

Her son Vic Wild is the gold medal winner in the parallel giant slalom for snowboarding. He is an American, born and raised in White Salmon, Wash. but the gold medal he won at the Sochi Olympics Wednesday was for none other than Russia.

How did this Yakima Valley kid end up competing for Russia? Wild decided to compete for Russia because his event, men's snowboarding parallel giant slalom, was not getting much support in the U.S., which prefers to invest in other snowboarding events that get more American attention.

Wild married his Russian girlfriend Alena Zavarina, who he started dating five years ago, gained Russian citizenship and made the Russian team. Today he is celebrating gold for Russia.
