Zaepfel Stadium is turning green this week. Jim Wright, the Yakima School District construction planning principal, says the new artificial turf is being installed to turn the once-exclusive football stadium into a multipurpose stadium.

"We are obviously right in the middle of the state and with a facility like this with artificial turf that will enable us to have many more events on this field,"  Wright says. That means not only football but soccer tournaments and marching band competitions. All the work, which includes new turf and a new track plus new lighting, is expected to be completed by the first week of November.
School officials say when the stadium work is finished they'll start work on phase three. The area to the south where the old school used to be will soon transformed into an area to hold track field events, football and soccer practice and the area will also house the school's new baseball fields and tennis courts.
