Women Win When it Comes to the Long Memory — Dave’s Diary
Men have argued with women about this for…well for at least, hmmmm I can’t recall, BUT it has been a long time! The question is - which sex has the worst memory. Well, now we know. A study published in a psychology magazine shows men are more forgetful than women. No wonder I couldn’t remember!
According to a post on thefrisky.com, the study surveyed over 48,000 people, asking them nine questions about their memory. For eight out of the nine questions, the men showed the most difficulty. Apparently this has not been documented before. Or if it was, some guy forgot where he put the documents! Researchers also say it was also surprising to see that men are just as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years old. Fortunately fellows there may be a liquid solution to help lock in information by way of another study reported at menshealth.com.
Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Irvine ran a study that showed drinking a few hundred milligrams of caffeine after studying helps to boost memory retention by twelve percent the following day.
The study co-author says this could be because caffeine raises your brain's levels of the chemical norepinephrine, which research has linked to enhanced memory storage or it could also be because caffeine may have a direct effect on the brain's hippocampus, a region involved with long term memory encoding and storage as long as the caffeine is ingested within an hour of finishing what needs to be remembered.
Now if I could just remember where I put my coffee cup.
