Yakima Fire Department investigators say a woman who was burned in a fire at an apartment, the Grand Hotel at 309 East Yakima Avenue early this morning is now being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Capt. Thom Schneider says the woman, who hasn't been identified was found in her bathroom after yelling for help through the smoke in her apartment. Schneider says she suffered second and third burns on her right leg and fingertips of both hands. He tells KIT News. "The sprinkler system they had in place is what kept the fire in check and the firefighters had very little work to do because the sprinkler system did most of it." He says the woman, described as a senior citizen suffered burns over more than 13 percent of her body. They believe she may have been smoking and fallen asleep. The cause of the fire was a burning cigarette. The woman's pet chihuahua survived the fire. The dog was found under a bed. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
