Hillary broke the law. That  case was clearly made by the FBI.  She signed off that she knew what the laws were and what the required behavior was.  Then she went out and violated the law anyway in a pattern that lasted for years.

She lied repeatedly to the American people saying that she didn't send classified material when in fact she did -over a hundred times.  Now we know what she did and we know she knew what she did and we know she lied about it.  Somehow from all this, the FBI determined that she didn't "intend" to harm the country so the FBI didn't recommend any charges, even when knowledge and intent aren't part of the threshold for charges- given the seriousness of the potential harm. A sad day for America.

There was a time when it was those few mavericks among us who used to say “it’s better to ask for forgiveness than to seek permission”.  There was often punishment for that but sometimes they would get away with murder!  (not the killing kind)  Those of us who followed the rules saw these people as unfair advantage takers, cheaters and outside the mainstream of morality.  They saw us as suckers.   (they still do)  Where did those days go?  When did the norm flip 180 degrees?

Now almost everybody cuts the corners, crosses the line or  jumps the gun and then when caught, they simply say, “I didn’t mean anything by it, but of course with 20/20 hindsight and  if given the chance, I would never do it again.”  And somehow we are pacified and there are no consequences for today’s cheaters.   We retreat, shaking our heads in dismay and they chuckle under their breath, all the way to the finish line in first place with their ill gotten advantage.   Hillary’s email, the Attorney General’s tarmac meeting with Bill Clinton are just the latest examples.

Having values, standards and morals all speak to a quality character, but they don’t necessarily speak to winning politics.  Good people who stand on principle are tired of standing at the end of the line, behind the cheaters.  Maybe that’s part of the appeal of Trump.  He calls out the liars, he says the “system” is rigged and he acts out in a way a lot of the “play by the rules types” agree may now be necessary.

Maybe our values wouldn’t allows us to act like Trump in response to the latest injustice of the day, but in the face of what we see playing out in politics today, (thanks for nothing FBI) perhaps we are prepared to elect someone to fight fire with fire  on our behalf.
