While ski areas in the west are in desperate need of snow, officials at the White Pass ski area say they have been able to open 80 percent of the terrain since Dec. 12.

Spokesperson Kathleen Goyette says some people are assuming because Snoqualmie Pass has not opened conditions must be terrible throughout the state and Goyette says that is just not true. She says they made snow below 5,000 feet to cover the base area but says, "We’ve had natural snow at 5,000 feet and above since mid November. We’ve got 50 inches up there and more snow in the forecast.”

In fact White Pass is offering a deal to skiers this week; on Wednesday the General Manager Kevin McCarthy will hand out $10 lunch vouchers to anyone who purchases a lift ticket to prove that White Pass has some of the best conditions in the state.

McCarthy will even take some runs with skiers to show off his favorite spots in the newly opened Paradise Basin.
