seen as a source of humor has been validated as a point of concern.  When 97 participants were analyzed, it was revealed those who had smoked as teens but hadn't lit up for at least two years scored more poorly on tests that assessed their long-term memory.

Previous findings from the same group of researchers showed that pot use affects short-term memory negatively too. It's because the hippocampus of the brain is known for the formation of long-term memory, and it also is dense with cannabinoid receptors. The marijuana plant is thought to have at least 70 cannabinoids, or compounds, that include the active ingredient associated with the drug's psychotropic effects called THC.

Researchers say given the high level of receptors in the hippocampus that attract THC, it makes sense that part of the brain looks different within someone who abused THC for several years as an adolescent." (Fox)
