October is National Fire Prevention month and the theme this year is working smoke alarms save lives test yours every month. Yakima Firefighter Nick Sloan says a majority of the fires they battle happen in the kitchen. "Unfortunately we still have those instances where we have a kitchen fire and we come in the home and the batteries are out of the smoke detector." Sloan says if you have a smoke detector in your kitchen move it to nearby room so it's not set off every time something starts to smoke in the kitchen. He says detectors in nearby rooms will still be as effective but they wont' operate at a time when you don't want them to...when you're cooking. And don't forget Sloan says it's vital that you test your smoke detectors at least once a month.
