It’s Black History Month and the presidential political campaigns have moved into South Carolina where 30% of the population is African-American. The personal finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s States with the Highest Political Engagement Among Blacks. Washington State can boast being the number one state for proportional representation of Blacks in national party conventions—but that’s about all we can point to.

WalletHub’s analysts compared six key metrics including black voter turnout, representation of blacks in the state legislature and national party conventions and registration during the most recent midterm and presidential elections. So, how well did Blacks do in the Evergreen State?

Compared to the other states, Washington ranks:
• 44th – Black Voter Turnout (2012 Presidential Election)
• 31st – Black Voter Turnout (2014 Midterm Elections)
• 25th – Black Voter Registration (2012 Presidential Election)
• 42nd – Black Voter Registration (2014 Midterm Elections)
• 23rd – Proportional Representation of Blacks in State Legislature
• 1st – Proportional Representation of Blacks in National Party Conventions
