Good news for most Washingtonians, good role modeling for most Yakamanians. In a recent study published by JAMA Internal Medicine, Mississippi, Louisiana, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina, respectively, are the fattest states in the US. The great Northwest comes out as, well… pretty great, with Idaho being number 36, Washington 41 and Oregon at number 43 with the lower the number the better!

We know several similar type studies have placed the City of Yakima in the top 5 or top 10 fattest cities in the country in recent years. Speaking of the country, the USA was number one (worst) last year but Mexico now claims that dis-honor.
The study shows that all 75% of all adults in the country are either obese or overweight. This percentage is broken down with men at 39.96% and women at 29.74%. Yahoo News reported that 31.8% of Americans adults are obese. (Elite Daily)
For the first time in history, the number of obese people has surpassed that of the overweight and being either can cause serious health concerns so it’s time for many of us to consider a lifestyle change in favor of a longer, happier life.
But new statistics published by the Physical Activity Council suggest a need for more aggressive efforts to combat the issue. In 2014, nearly 83 million Americans were completely inactive, the highest number reported since 2007. A sedentary lifestyle, or lack of physical activity, is one of the leading causes of obesity in addition to other factors such as genetics, emotional instability and lack of sleep. Washingtonians are active with our state at number 48.
With traditionally hearty-eating holidays approaching, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 key metrics to pinpoint where the weight problem is most prevalent and encourage Americans to re-evaluate their lifestyles. https://wallethub.com/edu/fattest-states/16585/#main-findings.
