VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Washington officials are setting out 34,000 traps around the state to capture gypsy moths to measure the effectiveness of spraying treatments.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Agriculture tell The Columbian that 42 of the insects were found in the state last summer.

Officials say Vancouver will have a high concentration of traps because one Asian gypsy moth was found at the Port of Vancouver last year.

The milk carton-sized orange and green boxes will also capture European and Siberian gypsy moths.

The containers use female pheromones to attract male moths that are trapped on a sticky surface.

Officials say gypsy moths eat more than 100 plant varieties and have caused problems in 19 northeastern and Midwestern states.
