The Yakima VFW is looking for students who want to get involved in the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest in which kids can win cash.

Yakima VFW Post 379 Junior Vice Commander and Scholarship Chairman Dave Fewell says the contest is open to kids in grades 9-12 who can write as well as speak.

The reason it’s called the Voice of Democracy is that after you write a great essay you need to record it.

It is a nationwide contest but kids can win at the local, district, state and national level. The ultimate winner of the VFW Voice of Democracy contest wins a $30,000 college scholarship.

All high schools in the Yakima Valley have information available or you can contact the Yakima VFW directly. Call 457-5400 or visit their Facebook page.

The theme this year for the essay is “Why veterans are important to our nation’s history and future.”

The deadline is Nov. 1.
