Vehicle theft is one problem that just will not go away in the city of Yakima.

Police say it is one the city's major crime problems and Capt. Rod Light expects a spike in the numbers every year at about this time when the temps plummet and people warm up cars in driveways.

“There’s no way around it if you warm up your vehicle you need to either stay in the car or get and extra set of keys to lock the doors.”

Light says it happens everywhere around Yakima. Police say 584 cars have been stolen so far this year which is better than the 1,026 that were stolen during the same time last year.

Light says many of the thefts happen during the fall and winter months.
