Varying Walking Speeds Can Help You Lose Weight
By now most of us know about the many health benefits of walking. New data indicates that if you varying your walking speed you can actually lose more weight.
Ohio State researchers discovered that exercisers who varied their pace over the course of a walk burned 20 percent more calories than those who kept a constant speed. The working truth there is acceleration and deceleration require more energy than maintaining momentum, and the more often you change speeds, the more you accelerate and decelerate.
Study authors say to do fun and weird things as you walk to burn more energy such as walk with a backpack, walk with weights on your legs, walk for a while-
then stop and repeat or even walk in a curve as opposed to a straight line. What ever works right? (UPI)
