City officials and police are examining their options on how to handle a problematic neighborhood in Yakima.

KIMA TV reports that there are several abandoned houses on South 20th St. that are often a temporary home to vagrants and criminals.

The buildings are condemned and the tenants evicted, but that hasn't stopped some people from living in the homes, or stripping the homes for things that can be sold.

Police have been trying to stay on top of the buildings and have chased several people from the properties.

Property owners have been notified that they needed to clean the area, but a lien has been placed on the properties. There are several problems including a leaky septic tank.

The city is discussing options with mortgage lenders among others.
