OLYMPIA (AP) — The count is in for Washington state's Electoral College votes. Democrat Hillary Clinton received eight votes, former Secretary of State Colin Powell got three, and Faith Spotted Eagle, an elder in the Yankton Dakota tribe, got one. Clinton won the state's popular vote.

However, Republican Donald Trump has formally won the presidency, surpassing 300 Electoral College votes to claim the White House. It takes 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Trump's victory came as thousands of protesters around the country made a last-ditch push to keep him from becoming the 45th president in U.S. history by trying to persuade Republican electors to abandon the GOP candidate because he had lost the popular vote to Clinton.
