SPOKANE (AP) — A jury is hearing opening statements Wednesday in the trial of a decorated Iraq War veteran accused of killing his estranged wife's mother, stepfather and brother.

Roy H. Murry is charged with three counts of premeditated first-degree murder with aggravating circumstances.

His trial in Spokane County Superior Court is expected to last several weeks.

The bodies of 59-year old Terrance "Terry" Canfield, a Spokane firefighter, his 52-year-old wife Lisa Canfield and her 23-year-old son John Constable were found following a fire at the home in Colbert May 26, 2015. They had been shot multiple times.

Murry was awarded the Bronze Star while serving in the Iraq War. Court documents show he came home with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Spokesman-Review reports that defense attorney Tom Krzyminski expects the case to hinge on expert testimony from evidence obtained from the charred home.

Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell is handling the case along with Jack Driscoll, his chief criminal deputy.
