Go ahead, let it all out.  Sometimes you just have to do just that in order to feel better and now a new study sort of confirms it.  Researchers say you’ll feel better after if you cry while watching a tear-jerking movie. To test that idea researchers in the Netherlands had a group of 60 volunteers watch two emotional films, and then reflect on the feelings they had while doing so. Twenty-eight participants admitted they cried during the films, while 32 didn't shed a tear. The criers experienced a surge of happiness 90 minutes after the experiment, while non-criers felt initially down but then returned to neutral after the films.

From that, researchers surmise it may be the dip and subsequent return of emotions to previous levels that make criers feel as if they are in a much better mood after getting upset.  The add  it is possible in the case of the particular strong mood improvement experienced by those participants who cried that fueled the popular notion that crying brings relief.
