Trish Helms, manager of Yakima's Kameo Flower shop, is having a very busy week.

It's Valentine's week, and Helms says lots of people are calling for flowers.

"Really what's popular on Valentine's Day is lilies and roses," she says. "They are good No. 1 sellers."

She says nothing says love more than roses and they're in big demand this week in Yakima and across the country. Helms says roses, especially, red and pink roses are the favorites of lovers on Valentine's Day since the roses have been the symbols of love dating back to Victorian times.

But any red or pink flower is the most common choice. There's no steadfast rule as to which flower is best on Valentine's Day.

Helms says florists will be busy all week, but Friday will be the busiest day since Saturday is Valentine's Day. A recent survey by the national retail federation shows 37.8 percent of Americans will buy flowers for Valentine’s Day spending a total of $2.1 billion.
