A 16-year-old boy was shot during a burglary in Wapato on Sunday morning. The boy was taken to Harborview in Seattle in serious condition.

Yakima County Sheriff's deputies say it happened at about 9:30 a.m. at a home on Mckinley Road north of Progressive Road.

They say the family was sleeping when they heard a noise and checked to see if someone was inside. During the search the suspect assaulted family members in an attempt to get out of the home.

While he was trying to escape the homeowner fired a single shot and struck the 16-year-old Toppenish resident. He was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso. No family members were injured.

Evidence at the home showed the teen was searching the residence and removing property.
