Scammers were busy in 2016 in the Pacific Northwest. According to the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Washington 814 scams were reported to the bureau's scam tracker last year. And what was the number one scam? Tax collection fraud topped the list as the most reported scam in the last year. There were 196 tax collection scams reported. Other top scams were connected to online purchases, sweepstakes or lottery prizes, debt collections and employment.
The information is based on scams reported by consumers to bbb.org/scamtracker, a free interactive online tool launched in 2015 by the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust.
