Yakima To Get 12 New Police Officers And One Firefighter

Yakima City Council members voted to go through with a six percent utility tax hike for next year. The $2 million that's expected to come from that hike will be spent on public safety. It will cover 12 new police officers and one firefighter, as well as keeping the legal department's staff full and helping fund the gang-free initiative

All Too Familiar – Work Spark Causes Brush Fire

 

A spark from a work crew using a cutting tool in the parking lot of Yakima Cinema on North 16th Avenue is being blamed for yesterday's big brush fire. Deputy Yakima Fire Marshal Brandon Dorenbush says many homes in the area where spared from the fire because of the efforts of firefighters but others he says had created a green barrier around their home.

 

Dorenbush says when the fire first started it was small and fire units from Yakima thought they had it under control. But the wind kicked up the fire as it started to move toward homes and businesses. Firefighters had the blaze under control by late yesterday afternoon.  No injuries were reported.

Two of the area's biggest fire departments could soon become one. It's money problems that are spurring both the Yakima and Union Gap Fire Dartments into action. Our news partner KIMA Action News says a study is now underway to see what the impact would be on you. Officials say benefits are two fold: a faster response when you call 911 and greater manpower during emergencies.
