Suspect In Officer Shooting Charged With Murder

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A 26-year-old man arrested in the fatal shooting of a northern Idaho police officer has been charged with first-degree murder.

In the hours after Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Greg Moore was shot and critically wounded early Tuesday, Jonathan Renfro was initially charged with counts including attempted murder as well as theft of a police vehicle. Moore died Tuesday evening.

The Spokesman-Review newspaper of Spokane, Washington, reports Kootenai County, Idaho, Public Defender John Adams confirmed Thursday that the charges have been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh has filed an amended complaint in the case but wouldn't comment on the new charge. The prosecutor has not said whether he intends to seek the death penalty.

Also on Thursday, a judge granted a 30-day delay in Renfro's preliminary hearing at the request of the defense. He had been due back in court May 15.
