Lots of people in Yakima are discovering stand up paddle surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) (Hoe he'e nalu in the Hawaiian language) that started in Hawaii. Growth in the sport is huge in Washington and Oregon because all that's needed is some balance and a person can enjoy a day on the water. With the help of my daughter LisaLyn Tormey and friends Sara Oppliger and Caroline Goyette we tried SUP boarding at Yakima's Sarge Hubbard Park. All of us knew how to swim and we also had a boat nearby but for first timers we recommend a life jacket. The boards, both blow up and regular are available for rent and purchase at the Sporthaus in Yakima. They're also available for purchase in a variety of other locations including Costco.  Try it before the summer is over...it's lots of fun.
