Officials in the lower Yakima Valley are combatting suicide with a special event next week.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Washington among teens and young adults between the ages of 15-24.   According to the recent survey, 28 percent of the students at White Swan High School said they have considered committing suicide, 22 percent of the students surveyed said they had made a plan to commit suicide and 22 percent said they have attempted suicide.  The results of the survey identified the need for suicide prevention training in the community. A group of local agencies and organizations are taking action before it’s too late.  The event called "Suicide Hurts II" is set for May 19.
The community suicide prevention event, QPR Gatekeeper Training, is set for Tuesday, May 19. The evening includes dinner at 5:30 p.m. at the Mt. Adams School District cafeteria and the one-hour training session beginning at 6 p.m. in the middle school gym. Dinner and childcare is included for all participants.

The event is sponsored by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, Mt. Adams School District, Dream Makers, Ft. Simcoe Job Corps, Northwest Community Action Center, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
