Could these be the secrets of the Seahawks as they muscle up for a run to the Super Bowl? Probably not but they could help you shed a few and get back in shape.

Yesterday we told you how researchers have discovered the life-extending properties of whole grains as a reason to build carbohydrates into your weight loss-workout program.  Now we add the best beverage to wash down that whole wheat wonder, and we’re talking about good old milk. That’s right -- moo juice, white of the cow, that which does a body good. Milk!

A new, small study reveals that milk and milk alternatives are the best ways to rehydrate after a workout thanks to their natural balance of sodium, carbohydrates and protein. Fifty million Holsteins can't be wrong, right?

Researchers had 15 men cycle for four rounds each and had them drink a different beverage after each workout: cow's milk, soy milk, a milk-based meal supplement or Powerade. Drinking the milk-based meal supplement led to better fluid retention than the other drinks, and all outdid Powerade in terms of rehydrating the body.

The downside of chugging the milk? It made participants feel more full and a little bloated.

So, what about H2O? For the record, drinking plain water after exercising led to a drop in sodium levels, which can lead to even more dehydration. (Time)
