SPOKANE (AP) — Trial is underway for a Spokane attorney accused in the kidnapping and rape of a woman in 2014.

The Spokesman-Review reports Robert Caruso's trial began last week after being postponed earlier this year while he received treatment for colon cancer.

Court documents say Caruso approached the alleged victim after she was in a car accident and told her he would take her to the hospital.

The victim told police Caruso took her to his home instead, where he gave her alcohol and pills and sexually assaulted her.

Court papers say the woman was able to escape and was found by a witness who spotted her hiding nearby in some bushes wearing only underwear.

Caruso's attorney maintains the sex was consensual and that his client is a victim of "malicious prosecution."
