SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Speed Week races that draw hundreds of racing teams from around the world to Utah's famous salt flats have been cancelled for the second consecutive year because of wet conditions.

The event organizers announced the cancellation Monday of an event that was scheduled for Aug. 8-14. Bill Lattin of the Southern California Timing Association said the flats are either too wet or too patchy.

Speed Week draws about 10,000 to 15,000 spectators from as far away as Australia, in addition to the hundreds of racing teams. Racers driving cars, motorcycles and other vehicles reach speeds up to 400 mph.

Speed Week is the biggest of several racing events held at the Bonneville Salt Flats each year. The salt flats, a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville, are about 100 miles west of Salt Lake City.
