It is becoming harder and harder for small Ag companies to compete in light of all the mergers and acquisitions. Privately held Land O’Lakes, best Known for its Purina brand pet foods, and line of dairy products bought the St. Louis Park, Minnesota, breeding and biotech firm called Ceres, that markets seed products under its Blade brand. The company also sells and stores grain. Continuing onto more acquisitions news, WSJ reports that there will be a long review process for the China National Chemical Corp. better known as Chemchina’s attempted purchase of Syngenta. The U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment is just one of a host of global regulators involved in this process as US farm groups have expressed national security concerns over the acquisition, worried about long term risks to our nation’s food supply. According to the WSJ the Syngenta deal is one of “several mergers with the potential to shape the 100 billion global market for crop seed and pesticide.” To sweeten the deal Chemchina recently announced that it had received an additional $5 billion from China’s largest state owned conglomerates in its hopes to finalize the deal for the Swiss company.
