A 60-year-old woman from Olympia was killed at the White Pass ski area on Saturday.

The Lewis County sheriff's office says the woman, identified as Cathy Carlson, was skiing Saturday morning in the expansion area of the resort when she lost control and struck a tree.

Sheriff's officials say an off-duty ski patrol member saw the crash. That person reported that Carlson lost control and started falling backward and tried to correct herself but instead struck a tree with her chest and upper body.

Carlson died while being taken to the aid station at the lodge.
