I was born and raised in Yakima and have many fond memories. It's comforting to know that many things are still available today like swimming at Franklin Pool and sledding town the terraces at Franklin Park. But what about things we used to be able to do? Here's a small list of things you can't do in Yakima anymore

  • Play Tic-Tac-Toe with a Chicken

At the old Country Store they had a game right when you walked in that allowed you to play tic-tac-toe with a chicken. It was fun and unique. I could never beat the chicken, but I've tied before. I wish I could challenge that chicken again.

  • Enjoy an old fashioned milkshake at Jordon's Drugstore

On 11th and Tieton there used to be a place called Jordon's Drugstore. I remember going there pretty often as a child - probably because my parents got their prescriptions filled there, I'm not sure. They had an old fashioned milkshake machine which I thought was the coolest thing ever. They've since moved that machine to the soda fountain at the Yakima Museum, but there was something special about getting it from here.

  • Cruise the Ave

Although there's nothing against driving down Yakima avenue at night, it used to be a thing to do in town. It was the place to be! Basically, you'd drive down the road, turn around and drive back on Yakima avenue. Technically, you still could and there are a few designated 'cruise nights' in Yakima, just can't do it on a nightly basis -- especially weekends.

  • Play Donkey Kong (or anything) at Mean Machine

Right by Davis High School used to be the Mean Machine. It was a smoke-filled arcade being it was open during a time when people could smoke indoors. I loved it here because they had video games I couldn't find anywhere else in town. My mom hated it because I always smelled like an ash tray after I went there. I wish we still had a classic arcade like this in town.

  • Loiter at Yakima Mall

Yakima Mall was one of those places I took for granted. I'd casually go in, usually on Saturday, just kind of kill time and walk around. I'd pop in the video game store, I'd grab a soft pretzel, I'd see what new toys they had a KB Toys and Hobby, grab some Chicken McNuggets -- I'd just be a mall rat for a while. Now it's gone. We do, however, still have Valley Mall which is nice.

  • Rent a Video at Crazy Mike's

Yakima has had some great rental stores in the past, but none were more unique and had a better selection, in my opinion, than Crazy Mike's video. From an awesome horror selection to row and row of video games and even the odd titles that none of the mainstream videos stores had, you were sure to find something at Crazy Mike's. I miss that place.
