Seattle's head coach said that the injuries to cornerback Byron Maxwell and center Max Unger were not as severe as they might have been, but related that wide receiver Paul Richardson is out for the remainder of the playoffs with a knee injury.

Carrol said that Maxwell was a surprise situation on Saturday, after the defensive back complained of "shortness of breath."

“He was real sick. He’s had a history of some chest stuff. He’s had pneumonia before and all that,” Carroll said on a Seattle radio station Monday. “So he was uncomfortable and he couldn’t catch his breath in normal fashion, so he could play a play, but he didn’t know if he could play a sequence.

The coach also said that wide receiver Paul Richardson suffered a season ending knee injury, tearing an anterior cruciate ligament.

“He’s had such a great rookie season for us — contributed in such a big way, such a great kid,” Carroll said. “I mean, (if) anybody gets hurt, your heart goes out to them, but this is guy that did a great job for his team. He did a great job. Really showed up and came through in a big way.”

To take Richardson's roster spot, the Seahawks have activated third-team quarterback B.J. Daniels from the practice squad.

“He’s going to help us in a number of spots,” Carroll said on Monday. “Of course he’s a third quarterback, but we’ll see this week how he works to fit in on special teams. He’s a backup returner for us, he can play running back and wide receiver as well. He’s been doing that all year, so he’s a very versatile guy for us to bring to life right now.”

Carroll also said that center Max Unger's ankle injury wasn't as bad as it was first thought.

Unger thought he might have suffered a similar ankle injury against the Panthers to the one that kept him out for six games, he but was able to walk after the game and felt good on Sunday, according to Carroll.

“He thought it happened again, but it didn’t,” Carroll said Monday. “So he was very fortunate, but he could feel that stress go right to the spot that it hurt before. He actually felt pretty good the next day and looks to be OK.”
