After years of debate, and community frustration, the Yakima School Board has committed up to $4.5 million dollars to renovate the school districts Zaepfel Stadium. The school board unanimously voted to move forward with the first phase of renovations. Those renovations include putting in new lights, a new track and field turf.

Yakima School Board President Martha Rice says the exact method of funding has not yet been decided, "The board has several funding options available to it, none of which would put any burden on taxpayers, meaning no additional taxes. If all goes as planned , she construction could begin by mid May with the first phase completed by late September or early October.

Other improvements proposed for the 50 year old Yakima School District facility include
new concessions, locker rooms, press box and rest rooms. Those phases would have to likely be funded with help from the business community.
