Crews found the fire in one apartment unit and while getting people out of the building another crew cut open the roof to remove the smoke. As the fire was being extinguished crews from Yakima, Yakima Training Center, East Valley, West Valley, and Selah fire departments continued to search the remainder of the building for other possible residents. two people were taken to a Yakima hospital where they were treated and later released
The Red Cross helped the building manager to find shelter the remaining 39 residents. Capt. Pfaff says A working smoke alarm system was the key to getting everyone out of the building.
