Attorney General Rob McKenna came to Yakima Monday to warn homeowners about mortgage scams. People from bogus companies are calling, mailing or knocking on doors with offers for lower mortgage rates or ways to avoid foreclosure.

"I met a fellow who is a postal carrier over in the Seattle area this happened to," said Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna. "He paid some money out and didn't receive anything of value. So it just breaks your heart whether its an elderly person whose living on their savings or someone else whose recently unemployed or anybody else. "

McKenna says a big red flag is these scammers are not from your bank and they want you to pay up front.

There are legitimate services that are free.
