Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi has a date with Yakima County Superior Court Judges today.

Rizzi has been subpoenaed to talk about a letter he wrote to the judges. In the letter he urged judges to consider the consequences when they grant furloughs to dangerous criminals.

“I’m asking that in the future they really take a hard look at individuals when they ask for a furlough.”

In the letter the chief sites the July 2013 furlough of a man with nine prior felony convictions and who was in jail on felony charges in Wapato. The man was arrested after a high speed chase after failing to return from the furlough.

The man has not been sentenced and the judges feel the letter was an attempt to influence the judges sentencing decision.

Chief Rizzi will appear in a county superior courtroom this morning to discuss the issue further with superior court judges.
