In the Bible’s book of Matthew you’ll read that “man cannot live by bread alone.” Dietitians agree, but I have spent a lot of years trying to disprove that! I love bread and I really love fresh homemade bread. Now it seems a lot of us Americans are getting more suspicious of carbs and especially bread.

A new study in the journal Nutrients reveals our consumption of grain foods such as bread, rolls, tortillas and ready-to-eat cereals is much lower than we might expect -- less than 15 percent of all calories in our total diets. That doesn’t seem to match with the amount of conversation we read and hear about carbohydrates, but before you give the last delicious slice to the dog you need to know that you shouldn't cut these foods completely out of your diet.

The great grains are a source of valuable nutrients including dietary fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin A.
