If you smoke make sure you put your cigarette or cigar out in an ashtray and not in a planter or bark in landscaping. This is fire prevention week in Washington State and Yakima Fire Department Capt. Jeff Pfaff says they've seen a major increase in smoke related fires in the past year especially fires in landscaping near homes and businesses. "All it takes is a little wind blown across. The cigarettes don't go out and the material ignites." Pfaff says they've seen an increase of residential fires, planter fires and commercial landscaping fires caused by lit cigarettes or cigars. Pfaff says if you smoke put out our cigarettes in water or a bucket filled with water or sand. The theme to this year's fire prevention week is "Don't wait check the date...replace smoke alarms every 10 years."
