In October the nation’s fall colors include yellow, gold, reds and the vibrant pink of breast cancer awareness.  You see it everywhere from the rodeo to the NFL and soon on the back of your car. A new way to donate and show your support for breast cancer screening and testing starts Oct. 16 when you have a chance to bid on the first batch of breast cancer license plates before they go on sale to everyone, starting in January.

Money raised from the sale of the plates will pay for breast cancer screenings and follow up tests for women with limited or no insurance through the state Department of Health’s Breast, Cervical, and Colon

“Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among Washington women,” said State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy. “A regular mammogram is the best way to find it early and make sure women get a head start on treatment when it’s most successful.”

Routine screening is especially important for women 50-74 years old. Women between the ages of 40 and 49 and any woman with a family history of breast cancer should talk to their doctor about when to start getting screened for breast cancer. If you or your loved one have no insurance, or have a limited health plan, contact the Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program to apply for a free screening.
