The Yakima County Planning Commission heard from people who oppose a proposed ban on the production and sale of marijuana in the unincorporated areas of Yakima County.

Sheriff Ken Irwin, however, spoke in favor of the proposed ban saying legalization sends a bad message to young people during the public hearing Wednesday night.

The Yakima County Planning Commission is considering land use regulations to enforce the ban.

The commission will now make a recommendation to the Yakima County Commissioners. The commissioners are expected to vote on the ban in the near future. Last month, county commissioners extended the moratorium on growing and selling pot for six more months.

The hearing was held at the Yakima Convention Center.
