SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say sheriff's deputies in Washington state used a Taser on an 11-year-old who refused to drop a knife.

The Spokesman-Review newspaper reports deputies were called to a store north of Spokane on Thursday morning where they were told a male was wearing a mask and holding a knife. Another caller said a juvenile with a mask was running toward an apartment complex.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said deputies saw the boy between apartment buildings, holding a knife with a six-inch serrated blade.

Deputies say the boy stared straight ahead and didn't seem to register their presence as they asked him to drop the knife. The sheriff's office says deputies then used a Taser on the boy in an attempt to disarm him.

He was taken to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation.

No other details were immediately available.
