A man was shot by a law enforcement officer Monday afternoon after a Toppenish-area resident called authorities to report shots being fired at his home, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office says.

According to the YSO, the story unfolded like this:

Deputies arrived at the caller's home in the 300 block of Old McCoy Road at about 1:30 p.m., spotted a suspicious vehicle with several passengers and gave chase.

The pursuit continued to Wapato, where a man with a gun jumped out of the vehicle in the 200 block of South Camas Avenue and fled on foot. A sheriff's deputy and a Yakima Nation tribal officer chased him into a wrecking yard, where the suspect pointed the gun at the officers.

One of the two returned fire and hit the suspect, who was taken to a hospital. He's expected to recover.

Authorities arrested several other suspects and the investigation continues today.
