Yakima Police have released the name of an officer involved in Sunday's shooting of a 34-year-old man from Moses Lake who witnesses say charged toward the officer with a wooden club before he was shot. Capt. Jeff Schneider says officer 31-year-old Rob Walters is on administrative leave and must go through an investigative process before he's allowed back on the job.
The investigation into the shooting could take weeks. That information will be passed on to the Yakima County Prosecutor to determine if the shooting was justified. If it's justified the officer is allowed back on the job but not before the officer receives special counseling to help him deal with the situation. Sunday's officer involved shooting was the first of 2018. Last year officers were placed on leave for 6 officer involved shootings reported during the months of October and December.
