The "Save the Colonel" group in Yakima celebrated the 111th anniversary of a historic downtown monument Thursday. A fundraiser was held under the statue of Colonel J.J. Weisenberger on Yakima Avenue. Organizers are raising money so they so they can move it into the Yakima Valley Museum. A century of wear and tear has cracked and worn away the monument and the group wants to preserve it for future generations. "It's incredibly fulfilling, hopefully we're able to save it before it's just a stony nub here without the chance of being saved," said Mike Isaacs with Save Our Colonel.

Once it goes to the museum, the plan is to put a bronze and granite copy in the original statue's spot. The total cost for the project is about 70-thousand dollars.
