Restriping to mark the switch from parallel to angled parking starts at 7 a.m. Thursday in downtown Yakima, according to a city news release.

The work will close West Chestnut Avenue and South Third Street on Thursday. Chestnut will be shut down between First and Fourth streets, while South Third will be closed from Yakima Avenue to West Westnut. Workers will try to keep the post office accessible, the news release said.

The work will move to Second Street and Sgt. Pendleton Way on Friday. Second will close from Yakima Avenue to West Walnut, and Sgt. Pendleton Way will shut down between First and Fourth streets.

The changes, among the recommendations of a city consultant, should mean 120 new parking spots downtown, the city says -- but they'll also cut the
number of traffic lanes on Chestnut and Sgt. Pendleton Way.

Work should wrap up by 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, the city estimates.
