Downtown parking is likely to be the most popular topic at Tuesday's Yakima City Council meeting.

The council will hear from city officials who are ready to start a project downtown to help increase parking spaces around the proposed plaza area.

A Michigan company studied the downtown area and found that if it transforms the parking lot in front of the Capitol Theatre into the proposed plaza there would be a net loss of only one parking space if the city implements a plan to increase street parking.

That, and hiring a downtown parking manager,  is what the City Council is expected to begin work on Tuesday night.

Angled parking would be created on Chestnut, Second Third streets, as well as Staff Sgt. Pendleton Way between North Third Street and North First Street. The council also wants to create more free downtown parking and limit parking in some downtown lots.
