The medical community constantly bombards us with messages about the dangers of obesity and rightfully so. But there is a medical circumstance where being overweight may help prolong your life.Scientists have found very overweight cancer patients are more likely to survive after treatment for advanced stages of colorectal cancer– and they’re as surprised as you are.

Researchers examined patients with a range of Body Mass Index (BMIs) and found that overweight and obese patients lived on average two-and-a-half months longer than those with low or healthy weights.

Duke University researchers say patients who had the lowest BMI were at risk for having the shortest survival which was counterintuitive. In this case, patients with the lowest body weight -- people who had colon cancer that has spread and a BMI of less than 25 -- were at the highest risk.  Researchers examined data from four different studies of 6,128 patients.
