Over 30 Washington State Homes Evacuated – Threatened By Landslide
SEATTLE (AP) — Authorities have completed evacuations of 34 homes that were damaged, isolated or threatened by a mudslide early Wednesday about 50 miles north of Seattle in Puget Sound.
Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Chief Ed Hartin says a man escaped from one home that was knocked off its foundation, and he was evacuated by a rescue crew in an all-terrain vehicle. Eleven other people from 16 homes along a road close to the water were evacuated by boat because the road was blocked by the landslide.
Hartin says another 20 to 25 people were evacuated from along a road higher up the hill that is being undermined by the slide. On Wednesday afternoon he said the slide on Whidbey Island still shows signs of movement.
